Yoga Sports Bra Care: Stop Elastic Stretching Out

Learn why sports bra elastic stretches out and how to wash, dry, and store your yoga bras to keep them supportive for longer.

Quick answer

If your sports bra elastic feels stretched out, the cause is usually heat, harsh detergent, or mechanical stress from washing and drying. Switch to cold-water hand washing with a gentle detergent, never use fabric softener or the dryer, and air-dry flat. If the band still doesn't snap back after one gentle wash cycle, the elastic is fatigued and it's time to replace the bra.

Why elastic loses its stretch

Elastic is made of rubber or spandex strands wrapped in fabric. Heat, chlorine, oils, and repeated stretching break down those strands. Once the rubber core snaps or relaxes, the bra cannot recover its shape. This is different from fabric pilling or color fading — those are cosmetic, but elastic fatigue is structural.

The most common accelerators are hot water, high dryer heat, and fabric softener. Softener coats the elastic fibers and prevents them from gripping each other, so the band feels limp. Chlorine from pools and sweat left to sit also degrade elasticity over time.

How to wash a yoga sports bra without damaging elastic

Hand washing is the safest method. Fill a sink with cold water and a small amount of gentle, pH-neutral detergent. Submerge the bra and gently squeeze the suds through the fabric for about a minute. Do not wring or twist. Rinse with cold water until no soap remains.

If you machine wash, use a mesh lingerie bag and a delicate cycle with cold water. Avoid washing with heavy items like jeans or towels that can snag and stretch the bra. Skip the fabric softener entirely — it leaves a residue that attracts dirt and reduces elasticity.

Drying and storing to keep support

Never put a sports bra in the dryer. Heat is the fastest way to kill elastic. After washing, gently press the bra between two towels to remove excess water, then lay it flat to air-dry. Hanging it by the straps can stretch them out, so dry it flat or reshape it and lay it on a drying rack.

Store bras folded in a drawer rather than hanging them by the band or straps. Hanging causes the elastic to bear the bra's weight, which slowly stretches it. If you must hang, use a padded hanger and fold the bra over the bar instead of using the straps.

When to stop trying to fix it

If the band still feels loose after one gentle wash and air-dry, the elastic has lost its memory. You cannot restore it with home remedies. Wearing a stretched-out bra means less support, which can lead to discomfort or bounce during yoga. At that point, replace the bra.

Signs it's time to replace: the band rides up when you raise your arms, the straps slip constantly, or the bra no longer feels snug on the loosest hook. If you've had the bra for six to twelve months of regular wear, replacement is likely the better option than trying to revive it.

Diagnose your bra's elastic problem

  • Band feels loose after one wash: The elastic may be fatigued from past heat exposure or softener residue. Try one more gentle hand wash with no softener. If it still doesn't snap back, the elastic is permanently stretched. If no improvement, replace the bra.
  • Straps slip but band is snug: Straps can stretch from hanging or from pulling them over your head. Adjust the sliders and store the bra folded. If straps remain loose after adjustment, they are stretched out. Replace if straps can't be tightened enough.
  • Bra rides up when you raise arms: This often means the band is too loose, either from elastic fatigue or from wearing the wrong size. Check the band on the loosest hook — if it still rides up, the elastic is gone. If the band is stretched, a smaller size won't fix it; replace the bra.
